Eligibility Criteria to Create a Free Demat Account
- Resident Indians
Indian residents aged 18 years or above can open an individual Demat account by completing the required KYC process and providing valid identity and address documents.
- Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)
NRIs can open a Demat account to hold eligible Indian Securities, subject to applicable regulations, KYC requirements and NRI-specific documentation.
- Minors
Minors can have a Demat account opened in their name, but it should be operated by a parent or legal guardian until they attain 18 years of age.
- Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
An HUF can open a Demat account in its name for holding Securities, with the Karta authorised to operate the account.
- Domestic Corporates
Companies and eligible corporate entities registered in India can open Demat accounts to hold Securities in the entity's name through authorised representatives.
- Clearing Members (Pool Accounts)
Eligible brokers and clearing members can maintain Demat or pool accounts for holding Securities related to clearing and settlement activities.
Types of Demat Account
1. Individual Demat Account
Individual Demat accounts are opened by individuals to hold and manage Securities electronically. They include:
Resident Indian Demat Account
- Regular Demat Account: Suitable for resident Indian individuals who want to hold and transact in Securities without the specific holding limits applicable to BSDA.
- Basic Services Demat Account (BSDA): Designed for resident Indian investors with smaller holdings and lower maintenance charges, subject to applicable eligibility conditions.
NRI Demat Account
- Repatriable Demat Account: Linked to an NRE account and allows eligible NRIs to invest in Indian Securities, with Funds and eligible sale proceeds transferable abroad subject to applicable regulations.
- Non-Repatriable Demat Account: Linked to an NRO account and allows eligible NRIs to invest in Indian Securities, with restrictions on transferring Funds and sale proceeds abroad as per applicable regulations.
2. Non-Individual Demat Account
Non-Individual Demat accounts are opened in the name of entities rather than individual investors.
Common types
- HUF Demat Account: Opened for a Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) and operated by its Karta to hold and manage investments on behalf of the HUF.
- Corporate Demat Account: Opened by companies, LLPs, partnerships, trusts and other eligible entities to hold Securities for purposes such as investments or treasury management.
- FPI Demat Account: Used by eligible Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) to hold and transact in Indian Securities, subject to applicable regulatory requirements.
